Over the past 34 years, my husband and I have raised 7 puppies.  Four German Shepherds, one Yorkshire Terrier, and two Standard Poodles.  I'll never forget our first puppy . . . I was 25 and she was a German Shepherd Dog.  I wanted a "Rin-Tin-Tin."  I didn't know much about puppies, and German Shepherds aren't typically a breed for first time dog owners. But, I remember I was scared of her at one point because she was biting so much! (She was teething but I didn't put that together.)  And, actually, I have many clients who have never had dogs before have similar impressions.  They think their dog is acting "aggressively" when actually their dog is displaying normal dog behavior.  But, even so, just like little children, we can't just let them be out of control or they'll never grow up to be well-mannered, well-adjusted adult dogs.  I've made mistakes that you don't have to. Dog training has evolved tremendously since I got my first puppy. Raising a puppy can be a pleasure if you find a puppy or dog that is right for you and you're prepared.   I've learned a lot from raising my own puppies, and even more from working with my clients with puppies of all breeds and temperaments over the past 11 years.  Getting a puppy sounds like so much fun, and it is . . . but, it's also a huge committment and a lot of work.  So, before you take the leap and get a puppy or dog, let me help you be prepared and get you off to a great start.
