Help for Problem Behavior

Often, people hope that their dog will outgrow problem behaviors, but, this is not the case.  When your dog is having a problem, it isn't going to go away by ignoring it.  Dogs that continue to practice inappropriate behaviors just get better at it.  So, don't wait to address behavior issues, especially if there is aggression involved.

Many behavioral problems can be resolved with contemporary methods that include behavior modification, reward-based training, exercise, and appropriate management. Tara uses behavioral solutions for your dog that are recommended by the most highly regarded canine behaviorists in the country, including the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior.

Understanding canine behavior and how to effectively communicate with your dog, often improves behavioral problems and your relationship with your dog.  Tara is recommended by veterinarians in the Charlottesville area.  For information about private in-home consultations and training click here.

  • Rude, pushy behavior

  • Dog-dog aggression*
  • People aggression*

Please note:  If your dog has aggressive behavior I require a referal from your veterinarian.  It is very important to rule out a medical component when dealing with aggressive behavior with dogs.  If your dog is sick, it can affect his behavior.  Sometimes we don't even know that the dog is sick unless they have a complete medical workup.  So, please, if you notice a behavioral change in your dog, or if your dog develops aggressive behavior, it's very important for you to take your dog to your veterinarian and rule out a medical issue before you contact a trainer.  This website is an excellent resource Agression: When Should I Worry

I take aggressive behavior cases on a limited basis.  Please contact me by phone and let me know in detail about your dog's aggression issue.  This way, I will be able to determine if I will be able to help you. I will take dog-dog aggression, and people aggression depending on the situation.  I do not, however, work with dangerous dogs, or cases that have legal ramifications.
